Facebook friends. Most of us have them. Some of us even have them a half a world away. Thanks to the Internet, we are constantly sharing our stories, sharing our lives, and now sharing our holiday traditions, like Christmas music.
The Christmas holiday and our beloved Christmas music is part of this cultural exchange. From sending to e-cards to buying that annual stamp to send a real card (how much is a stamp these days?), we share the best parts of the holiday with our friends and family. Music is often one of the best parts of the holiday season.
What would be on your Christmas music playlist?
Think about all the great songs and some of the best Christmas music videos:
- Burl Ives sang ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.’
- Mariah Carey and Michael Bublé both sang ‘All I Want for Christmas is You.’
- Bobby Helms sang ‘Jingle Bell Rock.’
- Eartha Kitt sang ‘Santa Baby.’
- Luther Vandross hit the charts with ‘Every Year, Every Christmas.’
- Amy Grant sang about ‘A Tennessee Christmas.’
Time for Snow
For some of us, we can’t count on seeing snow this year. But we can all experience a little snow for our holiday by listening to the universally loved song, ‘White Christmas.’ Sung by so many great artists, The Times-Picayune actually wondered who sang it better, Elvis or Bing Crosby? At times I lean toward Elvis, but Bing’s version is just so classic. Who do you think sang it better?

Whatever your favorite Christmas song is, you might be surprised to know it can be found in many different languages such as German, Japanese, Spanish, and Russian. There is even an easy to learn version of ‘White Christmas’ for kids in French.
If you are someone who loves the idea of crossing language barriers, an online certificate or online degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) could be exactly what you are looking for this season.
Whether you love listening to White Christmas, Noël Blanc (French), or Blanca Navidad (Spanish), you can explore the world through language with a graduate online certificate or even an online degree in TESOL. Learn more about TESOL programs online by visiting online.usm.edu/programs/ and have a very, merry las fiestas (holiday season).
