Southern Miss is Changing the Game in Coaching

| 1 minute read

If you’ve got the coaching spirit and the drive to mentor young athletes into potential professionals, you should prepare yourself for anything on the field and in the locker room. If you want to stay ahead of the game, The University of Southern Mississippi has made big changes to the Coaching and Sport Performance MS to keep you ready for any competition.

The Coaching and Sport Performance MS program has made changes across the board from the admission requirements to the curriculum. One major change: NO GRE! We’ve trimmed down our requirements to make it easier for you to get in the classroom and back on the field.

We have also received a new accreditation from The National Committee for Accreditation of Coaching Education (NCACE). According to Dr. Scott Piland, Director of the School of Kinesiology and Nutrition, this accreditation ensures “students are getting an educational experience that provides comprehensive coverage of the important knowledge and skills necessary for sport coaching. We are one of only 13 university programs in the country accredited for sport coaching.”

These changes will allow you to obtain your degrees sooner, while making you more effective as leaders and coaches.“In our revised program,” Dr. Melissa Thompson, Professor in the School of Kinesiology and Nutrition, explains, “Students will take fewer classes but experience more integrated content. We have updated the content to reflect the global trends in coaching  development and coaching practice. Students will develop skills that not only help them in their current role but also skills that will allow them to keep growing as the profession evolves.”

Dr. Thompson continues, “Because our revised program has only 30 credit hours, students can finish the degree in a more timely manner while also saving money. We believe that the way we have integrated course content will provide a more applied and efficient program.”

These changes were made just for you. You can get your degree faster, more efficiently, with a lower cost to help you be a better leader for your coaching staff, team, and players. Whether you’re an aspiring coach or looking to move ahead in your career, The Coaching and Sport Performance MS degree can help you gain the competitive edge.
