Explore the world through language with a graduate online Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages certificate (TESOL). This affordable and convenient online program provides graduates with the ability to teach in a variety of settings to a variety of international students. Through this online TESOL certificate, students have the ability to earn a certificate without coming to campus.

Plan A

Applicants not holding a Master of Arts in the Teaching of Languages must submit official transcripts which document a B.S./B.A. degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA and acceptable TOEFL scores (if this degree and/or the applicant is from a country where English is not the official language). Students must complete FL 561 – Teaching Second Languages: Theory into Practice, two TESOL courses approved by the graduate coordinator, and one of the following courses from the following list:

Applied Linguistics in Second and Foreign Languages
3 hrs.
Second Language Acquisition Theory and Practice
3 hrs.
Sociocultural and Sociolinguistics Perspectives in Language
3 hrs.

Plan B

Applicants already holding a Master of Arts in the Teaching of Languages degree may not apply any of the above courses towards the certificate. They must complete twelve (12) hours of TESOL (TSL) course work as approved by the graduate coordinator.

All Certificate candidates must
1) complete the Application for Admission to Graduate Certificate Program
2) submit the required application fee
3) complete a Non-Degree Enrollment Form for each course.

Do I need any special equipment or software?

Students can access the class through the internet from any computer with internet access. Most courses require use of word processing or spreadsheet software (Microsoft Office is preferred).

Admission Requirements
In addition to the requirements detailed in Admission Requirements and Procedures, applicants must submit the following documents:
    1. Statement of Purpose – In a letter or essay format, describe your professional experiences and goals and how obtaining this degree will help you to realize those goals.
    2. CV/Résumé
    3. Three Letters of Recommendation
    4. Transcripts

In addition, if English is not their native language, applicants must submit a TOEFL score of at least 83, with no section lower than 19. The department will also accept an IELTS score of a 6.5, with no sub-test score below a 6.

Program Requirements and Academic Policies
The TESOL Certificate requires completion of four (4) classes or twelve (12) semester hours. Students must earn a 3.0 GPA for graduation.
